[History]
Covering over 500,000 acres in California, Tulare Lake, was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. Fed by runoff from the Sierra Nevada mountains, the lake stretched over 100 miles long and over 30 miles wide before drying up in 1899.
Big Picture:
In 2023, after intense storms and record snowmelt, Tulare Lake partially refilled, marking the first resurgence in over a century.
